Earlier this year the R&A and USGA released a proposed a set of changes to the Rules of Golf, in an effort to bring them up to date to fit the needs of today’s game. This week we’re going to look at one of these modifications: touching the sand in a bunker.
Current Rule 13-4
The current rule states that you must not touch the sand with your club before your shot, resulting in a two-stroke penalty if you do – a rule we’re sure you’re all aware of.
New Rule 12.2b
Under the proposed changes, you will be allowed to touch the sand before you play your shot, as long as you’re not testing its condition, making a practice swing or grounding your club close to your ball.
